Switzerland – the perfect backdrop for an artist! I find that many of the places that I visit absolutely become my creative outlet. Visiting Switzerland was a lifelong dream of mine. I remember even in grade school wanting to go to Switzerland to see the beauty of the country and see the Matterhorn first hand.
Getting there wasn’t fun. Nine hours on a plane in a cramped seat was torture. I couldn’t wait to get out of that seat and around. Misery personified. After what felt like an eternity, we finally arrived in Zurich.
Steppling off that plane and out of the airport, I finally arrived in this amazing country and would come to realize my childhood dream had come true. First impression: this was the cleanest and most beautiful country I had ever had the privilege to visit. Not a gum wrapper, cigarette butt, not a scrap of paper or a plastic bag were to be found on the streets of Zurich. Instead, I saw beauty. Only beauty everywhere.
Cobblestone streets, an occasional bicycle, happy people strolling along and a few tourists looking for a place to shop or to eat.
Everywhere I looked I saw inspiration. Beautiful buildings, a river running right through the city and streets winding through the town.
As I took lots and lots of pictures, I could see in my mind paintings that would come to be in the weeks and years ahead. The cows and sheep with bells around their necks dotted the countryside. The snow covered mountains in some of the small towns that I would visit became another backdrop for painting ideas.
Little country churches and small houses that dotted the hills in each town that we passed. As I think back on these days, I have to say that I get a little tearful. Sad that my trip ended way too soon. Though I could have stayed for months, 12 days would have to do. Thankfully, my trip was well documented. As i look through my pictures, I see even more inspiration for future paintings.
Thanks Switzerland! Until we meet again.
