I chose to become an artist about 25 years ago. I started as a portrait photographer and photographed everything from babies to brides. Though I love the art of photography, I wanted more. I wanted to be able to express myself in ways that I felt photography limited me somewhat. To be able to take my ideas and turn them into what I see in my minds eye is totally freeing. It is a sense of satisfacation that is hard to describe.
Though most of my painted pieces start as a photograph, I find that painting allows me to express emotions, ideas, and moments in a way that photography often cannot. There’s something deeply personal and timeless about working on a painting — the richness of color, the texture, the beauty that each piece projects that encourages patience and precision. It pushes me to immerse myself in every brushstroke and layer, building depth both visually and emotionally.
My journey into painting started with a fascination of beautiful art and the work of artists like Norman Rockwell and Thomas Kinkade. I love how each of them tell a story with their art and how they use lighting in their pieces to convey a feeling, a personality and how each piece has a life of its’ own. I am drawn to their paintings and love to get lost in the nostalgic feeling of each piece.
More than just a creative outlet, painting has become a way for me to connect—with myself, with others, and with the world around me. It is my happy place! ,Painting hallenges me, and constantly teaches me to see things from new perspectives. Becoming an artist, is not just a career choice—it is a calling. A calling that I was and am happy to answer.
