Are you scratching your head trying to figure out the right size art for your room? Choosing the right size art piece for your space can seem daunting. Well, here are some ideas to help you figure out what size to choose.
Consider The Wall Where Your Piece Will Hang
Start by Measuring the wall where you want to hang the artwork. To give you an idea, art should take up 60% to 75% of the wall space (width-wise). I recommend cutting a template such as a piece of wrapping paper or butcher paper in several sizes that you are considering. Gently tack it to the wall where your piece will hang and then step back and take a look. Many times, this simple step will help you determine the right size.
Above Furniture? Use Proportions
If hanging art above a sofa, console, or bed consider these ideas. The art that you choose, should be somewhere around 75 percent of the width of the sofa. Leave about a half foot of space between the art and the top of the sofa. Though you don’t want your space to look crowded, you also don’t want it to look like a postage stamp placed on your wall.
Too many times, I have seen an art piece that is so small for the space that the viewer must walk up to it being inches away to view the piece. Once again, a template on the wall will help you determine if the size is correct for your space.
Single Art vs. Gallery Wall
If you decide to go with a Single Art Piece, Choose a bold piece to anchor the space. Choose a piece that you love. Make sure that the piece speaks to you or reminds you of a precious memory. Maybe a special vacation or a place you used to live.
If you go with a Gallery Wall, Lay out multiple smaller works in a cohesive arrangement. Look at the entire layout as one piece in terms of scale. Remember to cut paper the sizes of the images that you are choosing. This will help you layout your art BEFORE you actually place your hangers on the wall.
Consider Viewing Distance
For sitting areas, keep the center of the artwork at eye level. This will allow your piece to make a bold statement to everyone who enters your home or office.
For large rooms or open areas, larger art can be more impactful. So, go for it! Make a statement and choose your art to be the centerpiece of your room.
If in doubt, go larger. Small art can get lost in a space, while larger pieces tend to make more of a splash.
